Ekspan’s design and technical engineering staff both have involvement in research and development, especially when projects require specialist solutions from a product and service point of view. We carry out inspection test plans and work closely in partnership with the Sheffield City Region Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). The AMRC is a UK renowned centre of excellence which specialises in innovation and the development of new technologies and new materials. We use the Boeing aerospace unit’s Advanced Structural Testing Centre testing facilities for bespoke projects and in the development of emerging products. Ekspan have developed EN1337 and AASHTO bearings working in partnership with external resources.
Over the past decade there has been rapid growth in the global wind energy industry, which shall be further amplified within the UK due to energy generation targets for 2020.
Ekspan’s expertise in structural engineering and fabrications has allowed the company to partner within a consortium to optimize a patented offshore wind turbine assembly and installation process. This new process to build offshore wind farms will save significant time and cost, allowing electricity to be generated much earlier than using the current assembly method.
